Hold up, wait a minute! More breakfast? Hells yes, more breakfast! Don’t act like you don’t love waking up and treating your tired, worn-out bag of bones to a nice hearty meal to kick-start your day. Breakfast is a special meal, it brings people together, it gives life back to the hungover, replenishes the fast metabolisms of the exercise-obsessed and somehow extends the life of any weekend. It’s my favourite meal and as long as my fingers can fing, I’ll be typing up reviews of breakfast spots in Brisbane and beyond. Check it, yo.

The Single Guys
I’m moving to Kenmore, for no other reason than to be as close to The Single Guys as possible. The cafe is a small, minimalist space with a cool design-edge. As soon as you walk in you’re hit with the divine smell of freshly roasted coffee and trust me, it doesn’t disappoint. These guys take their coffee seriously and it’s to your benefit.
If the coffee weren’t enough, the breakfast will rock your world. The brioche French toast with caramelised apples, mascarpone, vanilla almonds and maple syrup is hands down one of the BEST I have ever had. It was so light and ridiculously rich in flavour, I ate every single bit and have been dreaming about it ever since.
The staff are friendly, accommodating and you don’t get that weird ‘hipsters paradise’ vibe that so often comes with top coffee and breaky spots. If you’re not from Kenmore, get your lazy buns in the car and get there. In the meantime, I’ll be building a small shrine in my living room, dedicated to the bloke that made that French toast.
Tucked down the other end of Montague Road, Alberto’s Shot offers a more peaceful start to the day. I happened to visit it on a lovely rainy day and found it was just the quiet, laid-back start to the day I needed. With tables lining the sidewalk, you can soak in the calm, suburban feel of West End’s more quiet streets without having to drive far to get it.
The service was really great and everything is well priced. I found the coffee and food to be good, but not so good I’m dying to go back or recommend it to everyone I come across. All the ingredients were really fresh and the food was tasty, so it’s hard to pinpoint why I’m not raving about it. I guess it just wasn’t anything special, it was just normal. I’d visit Alberto’s Shot again to give them another go, or maybe if I’d had a really big night and needed somewhere quiet to hide out until I got my groove back.
This sweet little cafe is tucked under the bottom of a building on Russell Street in South Brisbane. It’s unassuming, cosy and comfortable and, most importantly, will serve you delicious food and great coffee at reasonable prices.
The menu is yummy – it’s fresh, simple, delicious and completely unpretentious. The chefs let their skills do the talking and things like zucchini and halloumi fritters, housemade potato and caramelised onion hash and house-made crumpets with honeyed ricotta and roasted macadamias will leave you staring at the menu wondering what to choose.
What I adore most about this place is the genuine, considerate nature of the staff. The attentive owner was kind enough to check, without me even thinking about it, if each of the base ingredients used in the potato and onion hash were vegetarian-friendly and she even remembered to bring me soy milk, in place of regular milk, for my muesli. It seems simple enough, but it’s attention to detail like this that separates a great restaurant from a good one.
