I’ve visited Vietnam a few times but had never heard of Lang Co until our most recent trip. I love Vietnam and have been so keen to visit places away from the cities and favourite tourist destinations.  I imagined I’d need to journey into remote areas to find these quiet destinations and that a little bit of roughing would probably be involved. Turns out, finding a peaceful escape in Vietnam is easier than I’d thought and you can do it in absolute luxury. As part of a media trip to Vietnam, we found ourselves staying at the incredible Banyan Tree Lang Co and it’s safe to say, it’s one of the most gorgeous resorts either of us has had the pleasure of experiencing.

But first, watch this…

Where is this magical place?

There’s a good chance, like me, you’ve never heard of Lang Co before. Located in central Vietnam, it’s a destination famous for its picture-perfect white-sand beaches and turquoise water. Conjure up some images right out of your tropical holiday dreams and you’re on the right track. Banyan Tree is perfectly located, tucked away from the rest of the world while still offering access to Lang Co’s gorgeous beaches and natural beauty. You can dip your feet in the East Sea then turn around and marvel at the incredible Truong Son Mountain Range. What’s more, it’s located near three UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the imperial city of Hue, the old town of Hoi An and My Son’s historical ruins. Not only is Lang Co a dream-come-true beach escape, it’s also a portal to Vietnam’s rich history and unique culture.

How the heck do I get my sweet buns there?

You’ll find Lang Co and Banyan Tree around a 1 hour and 14-minute drive from Da Nang International Airport. We flew from Hanoi to Da Nang with Vietnam Airlines and were met at the airport by resort staff who helped us to the transfer vehicle. The drive was really easy and took us past some beautiful scenery along the way. The flight from Hanoi took around 1 hour and 20 minutes, so it was really quick and easy. There are flights departing out of Hanoi all day, which makes it convenient to find a flight time that works for you. You can also fly to Da Nang from Ho Chi Minh.

What are the rooms like?

I just took a deep breath, closed my eyes and exhaled in preparation for writing this. We had the absolute pleasure of staying in a Lagoon Pool Villa and I can honestly say it’s one of the nicest places Matt and I have ever stayed. It was exceptional and completely luxurious but not in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, out of place or awkward. It was heavenly.

Our private villa was huge, a whopping 131sqm, overlooking the lush green lagoon in all its magical, fairyland wonder. Equipped with a private pool, timber sundeck, reclining deck chairs and shade umbrella, it offered the perfect location to sit and soak in the sun, take a dip and just unwind. With high walls on each side and at the front, it offered total privacy, which I loved! It meant we felt totally secluded and could just relax and not worry about running into anyone, fighting for a spot by the pool or even how we looked – we could just be totally at peace.

Just outside the villa, you’ll find a very comfortable outdoor sofa and a table and chairs, so you can sit outdoors and soak it all in. Inside, you’ll find a warm, welcoming space that really captures those lush, tropical vibes, mixing them perfectly with all-out luxury. I loved the high ceilings, which gave the villa plenty of space and a sense of grandeur. Surrounded by glass doors all the way around, you can open things up to let in lots of natural light or close those heavy blinds for a good sleep-in. The King size bed is absolutely huge with two great-size, plush pillows you just melt into. I also loved the brilliant red artwork that features on the back wall, it adds a lot of texture and richness to the room.

Walk around the back of the bed and you’ll find a desk and chair. To the back of the room, a mini-bar decked out with absolutely everything you could need. Wander further around to the bathroom and you’ll find one heck of a bathtub, looking out over the glass windows to the garden. Don’t worry, though, nobody can see you! The bathtub is a really lovely addition to the villa, it’s so nice to have it separate from the shower so you can get cosy with a good book and a glass (or three) of wine and just relax.

To the left of the bathroom, you’ll find the toilet, and to the right, the shower, complete with a bench. I really liked the basins in the room, as well as the huge amount of mirror space it offered and a seat so I could sit and do my makeup. The extra touches and attention to detail really made the difference. We were treated to an in-room check-in and a buggy ride right to our front door, another detail which was really nice and took away any of those stock-standard hotel vibes. Just to note, the villa was also equipped with WiFi and a great-size TV offering cable channels (plenty of English ones, if you don’t speak Vietnamese).

But, what is there to do?

There is as much or as little to do as suits you. Honestly, I would have been quite happy holing up in the villa for 3-4 days, spending my time swimming, reading, writing, napping and drinking as much wine as my body could handle. It’s the ideal place to have one of those truly replenishing escapes, just to spend some time resting and recharging.

But, if some activities and sightseeing are on the cards, never fear! There’s plenty to do in and around the resort. We were treated to massages that, honestly, took both of us to a level of relaxation we never knew possible. The Banyan Tree Spa offers a wide range of treatments to replenish, cleanse, relax and restore and, you guys, it’s one of those fancy spas too so you know everything is done really well.

The resort also offers boat excursions, where you explore beautiful lagoons and the local fishing village, navigating through the mangroves in a traditional basket boat. Join a cooking class and learn to whip up a few of your favourite Vietnamese bites, explore the local area by bicycle, join a yoga class or set off on a day trip to the Bach Ma National Park, Hue, Hoi An or the historical ruins of My Son. There’s also an 18-hole, par-71 championship course designed by the six-time major winner, Sir Nick Faldo on the Laguna Lang Co property, where Banyan Tree and Angsana resorts reside.

Talk me through the food situation…

Mmmmm yes, let’s talk about the food situation. First things first, we had one night were I wasn’t feeling so well and decided to get room service. At such a fancy place, I was a little scared I’d be spending my entire life savings on a Caesar salad. Turns out, the room service menu is very well priced (like far cheaper than the room service menus of regular hotels in Brisbane). I’d definitely recommend taking advantage of your gorgeous villa and opting for a meal in – the food was delicious and delivered with genuine care.

You’ll find Azura located on the beachfront, offering indoor and al fresco dining. Here, they serve up fantastic Italian food, including some pretty spectacular seafood. Banyan Tree’s signature restaurant, Saffron, offers delicious, traditional Thai with a modern edge. You’ll love the incredible views the restaurant affords from its hilltop location. Head to The Water Court for Vietnamese and international dishes and Thu Quan for all-day snacks, refreshments, tea and cocktails.

If you’re after something a little special, the resort’s Destination Dining is ideal. You can dine in the private and luxury space of your private villa or along the shores of a very romantic corner of the beach. Everything is taken care of for you, all you need do is relax and enjoy the fantastic service and very delicious food.

The verdict

Both Matt and I loved our stay at Banyan Tree Lang Co. It was just such an incredibly special place, one of those places that stay with you for a long time. I can definitely see us going back there again in a few years to celebrate something special. In fact, I think the resort would be ideal for anyone looking for a very special, memorable escape in Vietnam. It would be perfect for honeymooners, celebrating a special anniversary or engagement, looking to spoil themselves or just splash out on a truly luxurious holiday.

What I love about the location is you really can have the best of both worlds. You can make yourself at home in your villa and spend your days relaxing in comfort and luxury then, when you’re ready, head out and discover charming parts of Vietnam, like Hue and Hoi An. So you get to have your luxury escape but not miss out on sightseeing and really experiencing the destination. I think Banyan Tree does a great job of letting you feel like you’re in Vietnam, as opposed to just being in a cookie-cutter resort that could be anywhere in the world.

I have to say, Banyan Tree Lang Co has been my favourite luxury stay of the year thus far! That’s a big call, I know, and I’m more than happy to do the hard yards and stay at other luxury resorts that want to try to pip them for the top spot. It’s tough, but I’m willing to do it…. for you guys, of course. So, if you’re looking for the ultimate luxury escape in Vietnam, without missing out on actually seeing Vietnam, Banyan Tree and Lang Co are definitely worth experiencing.
