Where is the hotel located?

You’ll find Trinity Wharf located in Tauranga, overlooking Tauranga Harbour, in the coastal Bay of Plenty (BOP). Spanning some 125km of coastline and home to some of New Zealand’s most beautiful beaches choosing where to stay in the BOP can be a tough! For our trip, we opted to base ourselves in the coastal BOP in Tauranga, close to Mount Maunganui. A metropolitan city, there’s lots to see, do and eat while also having easy access to different parts of the BOP region.

How to get to the Bay of Plenty

Located in the North Island of New Zealand, it will take around 3 hours 30 minutes to drive from Auckland to Tauranga. It is the perfect addition to a New Zealand road trip itinerary or a great extension to a visit to Auckland and the Coromandel (Read: How to spend 2 days in Auckland here).

If you’re on a road trip you’ll most likely want to fit BOP into your itinerary before or after the Coromandel. For example, you may spend 3 nights in Auckland, 2 nights in the Coromandel then head to the coastal BOP. If you’re moving south to north, you may choose to visit Napier, Taup? and Rotorua then head to the coastal BOP.

Overseas visitors will need to travel to New Zealand by plane. Visiting from Australia, we flew directly from Brisbane Airport to Auckland Airport with a flight time of 3 hours. However, you could also fly to Rotorua Airport if you prefer. We opted to fly with Qantas as they allowed 30kg of checked luggage and an in-flight meal.

What are the rooms like?

We stayed in room 126, a Harbour Deluxe Spa with huge floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, allowing plenty of natural light to flow through and uninterrupted views of the sparkling Tauranga Harbour. At 33m2 the room was open and spacious, with more than enough floor space to open up our suitcases and still be able to walk around without a stubbed toe in sight!

An ‘L’ shape, the entry way opened up into the main living space with space available in the cupboard to hang coats and clothes as well as a safe for storing valuables. A small fridge with tea and coffee making facilities nearby makes for a nice addition, ensuring you’re able to store some tasty bits and pieces to enjoy on the balcony later.

A generous King bed is perfectly positioned on the back wall so you can lay in bed with a cup of coffee and enjoy the views, without needing to move an inch! A large screen television, desk and chair and two additional arm chairs make the space functional. In the bathroom, heated floor tiles, a shower and seperate spa bath make for the ultimate relaxation spot, complete with fluffy robes to snuggle up in afterwards.

It is, without a doubt, the balcony that takes your breath away. Flowing curtains can be pushed back to reveal the sun-drenched sky and glittering water below. A table and chairs make for the perfect spot to sit and relax, whether it’s enjoying a quiet moment as you catch the sunrise or indulging in a drinks and nibbles at sunset.

What facilities does the hotel have?

Guests on a road trip will appreciate the free on-site parking and complimentary wifi, helping you stay connected while you’re away. If you’re visiting in the warmer months you’ll definitely want to take advantage of the infinity edge swimming pool.

For those who like to stay active there’s a gym on-site and the staff can help you find walking/jogging paths to get a good sweat going! When hunger strikes, you may like to enjoy a bite at the waterfront restaurant with options like grilled banana prawns, chargrilled eye fillet, mushroom risotto and more.

Best things to do in the coastal Bay of Plenty

You could easily spend a week in the Bay of Plenty, filling your days with endless activities and great food. Given we only had 2 full days to explore the region, we opted to stay close to the coastal areas taking a visit to spots like Waihi Beach, Leveret Estate Wines and Kaiate Falls. We climbed Mauao and ate at a range of fantastic local restaurants and cafes.

The verdict…

When choosing a place to stay, I like to look for a spot that allows me to feel as though I’m still enjoying the destination, even if I’m inside my hotel room. Our room at Trinity Wharf did exactly that! Thanks to the amazing location and harbour views there was never a moment where I felt I was missing out on enjoying the beauty of the Bay of Plenty.

Located in a central part of the BOP with a wide range of activities and food spots at your fingertips, plus easy entry onto the main roads in and out of the region, it’s convenient as it is comfortable. A stay here would be a great fit for couples on a road trip and families enjoying a trip together. Find rooms and book Trinity Wharf Tauranga here.

Our two-night stay was generously hosted by Tourism Bay of Plenty. All opinions are, as always, authentically our own.
