Where is the resort located?

Los Cabos is located in Mexico at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. There are two main towns, Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (don’t worry, it gets less confusing when you read it and say it a few more times). You may, however, hear people refer to Los Cabos simply as, Cabo! The towns are 45-minutes drive apart, linked by a 22 mile stretch of beach-front resorts spread along a major road.

Marquis Resort and Spa is located right on the beachfront, around 20 minutes drive from Cabo San Lucas and 13 minutes drive from San José del Cabo. Here’s a screenshot from Google Maps to give you a better idea of the resort’s location:

How to get to Los Cabos

To get to Los Cabos we flew to Los Angeles and caught a connecting flight from LAX to SJD (Cabo San Lucas, Mexico), arriving at Los Cabos International Airport. The flight time from LAX to Los Cabos is around 2 1/2 hours. As we were flying from Australia, we chose to spend one night in LA before catching our next flight. This gave us a chance to rest, recover and arrive at our destination having already dealt with the jetlag.

Pro Tip: If you’re catching a connecting flight in Los Angeles, you must collect your luggage at LAX, go through customs/border control then give your bags back to the airline/airport staff. There should be signs to follow and if you’re unsure, ask the on-ground staff for help.

What are the rooms like?

The entire Marquis resort faces the ocean, with all 235 suites at the adults-only resort offering spectacular ocean views. We spent two nights in an Oceanfront Junior Suite, located on the higher floors of the building. A spacious 650 sq. ft, we loved the generous size of our suite which gave us plenty of room to settle in and get comfortable.

Our suite at Marquis

Personally, I think when you’re visiting a spot like Cabo and choosing an all-inclusive, oceanfront hotel or resort, you want to make sure your room is comfortable enough that you can bunker down and spend your entire vacation there and around the resort if you so choose. To me, I would’ve been very happy spending a week soaking in every moment of our room and the resort facilities at Marquis. In fact, Matt and I were constantly talking about coming back for a whole week just to rest and recharge!

All suites offer ocean views!

Our suite was beautifully decorated with a Mexican contemporary style and my favourite thing about it was the private terrace. Furnished with two chairs and a table, our terrace offered uninterrupted views of the Sea of Cortez and the perfect place to sit and watch the sunset. We didn’t have time during our stay but I would have loved to order food and drinks to the suite for the perfect end to a day!

Inside, the suite also featured a very large and comfortable King size bed with pillows that were very comfortable too. A desk area offered the perfect spot for us to catch up on emails while the sofa and satellite TV allowed for some much-needed downtime too. There was plenty of storage space, allowing us to hang up our clothes and put things away, rather than having to step over suitcases and bags on the floor.

The view, looking down at the beach and resort, from our Suite

We both absolutely loved the bathroom too! Spacious and equipped with double sinks, luxury toiletries by L’Occitane, a separate walk-in shower and jacuzzi bathtub, it was spacious and perfectly functional. Our suite also featured a mini-bar that is refreshed daily, nightly turndown service, daily housekeeping, bathrobes and slippers, a safe big enough for a laptop to fit, iron and ironing board and great quality, complimentary Wi-Fi.

There is a range of different room types, depending on your personal preference and budget. They range from Ocean View Junior Suite right up to Oceanfront Casitas with their very own plunge pool and, for the ultimate in decadence, a spectacular two-bedroom presidential suite.

Honestly, our room was exactly the luxury, oceanfront, Cabo resort I had been picturing in my mind for many years. It delivered absolutely everything Matt and I look for in a great hotel room; comfortable, functional and a little bit special. But, hands down, my favourite part of our suite has to be the balcony and waking up to that view every morning! I hope I get the chance to go back and see it again.

Let’s talk about the food situation…

Our stay at Marquis was my first experience with an all-inclusive resort so I was a bit unsure how it all worked! Turns out, it’s pretty simple: you can have whatever you like, whenever you like!

The luxury all-inclusive plan offers 4 restaurants, a bar, and a cafe. Guests can enjoy unlimited gourmet meals and premium beverages. I was a bit skeptical about how good all of this could really be. I mean, surely they have to cut corners to make a profit, right? Wrong! The food and drinks we enjoyed were all fantastic.

Breakfast at Marquis

We started each day at Vista Ballenas for breakfast and, if you’re planning on visiting, I recommend you rise early so you can get a great seat with the very best views and avoid the heat once the sun gets up. The breakfast buffet was absolutely huge, stocked with an incredibly wide range of cooked and fresh options! I would list them all here for you but there were just so many! In addition to the exceptional buffet, there’s an a la carte menu to choose from too, offering yummy bites like freshly made pancakes.

At lunch and in the evenings, you can visit Vista Ballena for Mexican fare, Sakke for pan-Asian cuisine, Pergola for Italian delights including stone oven pizzas, Dos Mares for the very best seafood or Marquis’ signature restaurant by Thierry Dufour, Canto Del Mar. As I understand it, the first four restaurants are part of the all-inclusive package and Canto Del Mar is not.

In addition to the restaurants, guests can visit Espresso Cappuccino for coffee, pastries and sweet treats or stop in at Suspiros Bar for cocktails with an unbeatable view. But, if all that sounds like too much work, you can order 24-hour suite service and make the most of your amazing room!

If, like us, you’ve never visited an all-inclusive resort before and aren’t quite sure how it all works, here’s the scoop! When it comes time to eat, drink or just place an order, you can have whatever you want from the menu. Want to order 5 entrees just for yourself? Do it! Got a craving for a few margaritas and bottomless bowls of guacamole? No worries! It seems too good to be true but, you guys, it’s true!

The perfect spot for a bar!

With only two nights at the resort, Matt and I opted to dive right in with a Mexican dinner at Vista Ballenas on our first night. The food was absolutely delicious and the drinks were fantastic too! There were so many things on the menu we hadn’t tried before so it was great to broaden our horizons and experience something new and delicious. For our second dinner, we opted for a teppanyaki-style dinner and show at Sakke. We shared a table with a small number of other guests, which gave us a chance to chat and share the experience.

Importantly, I feel like there’s enough variety at the resort and on its menus to keep guests happy over the course of a holiday. Because if I were to stay at the resort for an entire week and splash out on the all-inclusive plan, I’d want to be certain the food was going to be enjoyable so I could make the most of it. I gotta say, I would be very happy dining at Marquis for an entire week!

The mornings are better at Marquis!

What other facilities does the resort have?

Okay, so we know the rooms are amazing and the food is delicious but let’s dive into what else the resort offers to keep guests entertained. For me, the thing I was most interested in was the pool situation so I could fulfill all my fantasies of laying by the pool with a margarita and a bowl of guacamole!

Marquis offers one outdoor, central pool and two infinity pools as well. Overlooking the beach with views stretching out over the Sea of Cortez, the infinity pools are the perfect place to spend your whole vacation. There are also a great number of seating options, meaning you won’t feel as though it’s crowded or like there’s a swarm of people on top of you.

Spend your days lazing by the beach…

The gardens at Marquis are beautifully manicured, creating the perfect backdrop for all your tropical adventures. On check-in, we were given a schedule for the resort activities that week including things like cooking lessons, wine tasting, archery, yoga, corn hole competitions, volleyball and much more. These activities are all part of your all-inclusive plan, though there are a few things that can be arranged at additional costs, like romantic beachfront dinners and private tennis clinics.

Marquis also puts on nightly live entertainment and weekly themed parties. Remember, your drinks are all-inclusive! So, you can head up to the bar to listen to live music while sipping on cocktails without a care in the world. We also found everyone at the resort to be really friendly so if you are keen to make new friends, you won’t have any trouble.

In addition to all that, you can visit the Marquis Spa for some much-needed pampering or get your pulse-rate up with a visit to the brand-new ATP-size basketball/tennis court. If you haven’t visited Cabo before, one thing to note is there’s no swimming at the beach in front of the resort.

Matt and I are both very confident, experienced swimmers and Matt is even a surfer and we were both a bit intimidated by the intensity of the waves crashing on the beach in Cabo. We went for a stroll along the beach and got our feet wet but swimming just isn’t safe and, once you see it, it really makes sense that it isn’t allowed. Just another reason it’s so important to choose a resort with the perfect pool situation.

The verdict…

This was our first visit to Mexico so I was very excited and was expecting a lot of good things from our first resort. Marquis lived up to all of my expectations! From the moment we arrived, we were so impressed by the resort’s grand exterior and dramatic lobby area. Our room was exactly what I had been picturing in my mind for so many years and the views from our suite were unforgettable.

During our entire stay, the staff were so attentive, kind and helpful. When one of our cameras got wet and broke, they helped us ring around the local shops, asking store owners if they could help us and when that failed, they translated websites for us. From the front desk team to the amazing women who took care of us at breakfast each morning, every single staff member was just lovely and it made our stay even better!

The first thing I did when we got into our room was to photograph it on my phone and send photos to my mum because I knew she would just love it too. I would highly recommend a stay at Marquis Los Cabos to my own friends and family! It’s the kind of place that has a great, global appeal and would make just about anyone very happy they stayed there.

A stay at Marquis would be perfect for a honeymoon (and a friend of mine said she went there for hers and just loved it!). It would also be the perfect spot for a much-needed week of rest and relaxation, the ideal holiday spot, especially for tired parents out there who want a chance to reconnect and just rest. I would gladly go back to Marquis again and sincerely hope Matt and I get the chance to visit again one day very soon.
