Hanoi is a hive of winding streets and historic buildings with the buzzing sounds of scooters as the backing track. Life here is played out on the streets with roadside cafes and street food vendors dotted across the city. From the bright red bridge at Hoan Kiem Lake to the stunning Temple of Literature and the multitude of delicious restaurants and cultural experiences, Hanoi is a fantastic destination for travellers. Of course, finding the perfect place to stay in Hanoi is very important! Here’s a look at our stay at InterContinental Hanoi Landmark 72 and all the information you need to decide if it’s the best hotel for your trip to Hanoi.

Where is the hotel located?

You’ll find InterContinental Hanoi Landmark 72 located in the Central Business District (CBD) of Hanoi. This is somewhat of an unusual place to stay for travellers as most tend to base themselves in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. In fact, each time Matt and I have visited Hanoi previously, we’ve also chosen to stay in the Old Quarter figuring it allowed us easy access to the things we wanted to see and do. We were a little unsure what to expect from Landmark 72’s location and were keen to find out what the drawcard would be to stay there instead of the Old Quarter.

Landmark 72

To give you an idea, Google Maps indicates Landmark 72 is located approximately 43 minutes drive to Hoan Kiem Lake (the heart of the main tourist hub). That said, we caught Grab Taxi (the local version of Uber) and it took us anywhere from 25 to 35 minutes to get into the Old Quarter dependent on traffic. Rather than being a pain, the hotel’s location ended up being a blessing!

The view from Landmark 72

So, why would you stay in the CBD instead of the Old Quarter?

In the Old Quarter, the hotels are mostly boutique-style. This is due to the city’s narrow streets and slim, long building designs (which I believe has to do with taxes). In place of big hotels you’d expect to see in cities like New York and Tokyo, for example, you’ll find much smaller ones. As Landmark 72 is set in the CBD, it’s able to take advantage of the high-rises and offers exceptional views of Hanoi from the tallest building in town!

In addition to the amazing views, the location allows the hotel to do more with all the extra space. For travellers, this means bigger rooms, more hotel amenities, more space and all the other benefits of a big hotel. What’s more, after spending our days in the bustling streets of the Old Quarter and its surrounds, it was nice to retreat to our quiet hotel room high above it all. It felt like we got away from the noise each day, finding peace in our spacious room. From the map below you can see the hotel’s location in relation to Hoan Kiem Lake.

How do I get to Hanoi?

We flew from Singapore to Hanoi on a direct flight with Singapore Airlines and had a fantastic experience. If you’re still figuring out your travel plans and are looking for an airline recommendation, we absolutely love Singapore Airlines. A full-service airline you’re treated to comfortable seats, delicious meals, a great range of in-flight entertainment and the very best service.

Singapore Airlines

Our trip actually took us from Brisbane to Singapore then onward to Paris, back to Singapore and over to Hanoi. Singapore is a fantastic destination for a layover, even if you’ve just got a few hours to spend in the airport there’s plenty to see and do (Read: 18 of the BEST things to do at Singapore Changi Airport) If you can, I’d recommend organising a layover of a few days in Singapore so you can visit Jewel, Gardens by the Bay and many of the other must-see sites in Singapore. One other great tip is to check out Singapore Airlines Changi Transit Rewards program which may allow you to receive SG$20 (FREE!) to spend at Changi Airport when transiting.

Transferring from Hanoi airport to the hotel:

On arriving in Hanoi, we were greeted with a private transfer in the hotel’s brand new Jaguar XF Prestige. It felt so good to step out of the hotel and see our names held up on a sign and have our bags whisked away to the waiting car. It took all the guesswork out of getting from the airport to the hotel and made our stay that much more enjoyable. The Jaguar is something to behold! It’s brand new and we were actually the very first passengers to try it out! It was spacious, comfortable and decked out with free wifi, snacks and drinks, cold towels and even a gift. Our drive into Hanoi was by far the best I’ve ever had and we felt like royalty.

Hanoi

It was a really nice start to our stay and set the tone for the rest of the week. If you’re looking for a fun way to treat yourself, I recommend this luxurious experience. You can’t help but feel all kinds of special! Even if the Jaguar experience isn’t on your radar, I’d still recommend organising a private transfer from the airport to your hotel. Otherwise, Grab Taxi is affordable and, in our experience, reliable. Be sure to download the free app and register with your mobile number before you depart from your home country if you don’t have mobile roaming.

What are the rooms like?

We stayed in one of the hotel’s incredible corner suites and absolutely loved it! Seriously, it was so amazing there were mornings when we just didn’t want to get out of bed. We would’ve been quite happy staying curled up in bed all day, enjoying the massive room and amazing views! But, those YouTube videos aren’t going to film themselves.

Landmark 72

A generous 92sqm, our spacious room offered absolutely stunning views of the sprawling city and off to the mountains in the distance. Sitting together in the living room, Matt and I were able to watch storm clouds rolling in from the distance and, at some points, were even above the clouds. It was amazing! The whole hotel sits atop a highrise, taking up the top floors with the rest of the building below. You feel like you’re perched on top of the world, something I’d never experienced before in Hanoi.

Landmark 72

Our corner suite featured an entryway, a separate living room and bedroom, a spacious bathroom and a desk/office area located in the bedroom. A large, smart TV was located in the bedroom and living room, featuring a large number of channels including English-speaking tv and movie channels for those days when you feel like staying in bed watching movies. In addition, the room also included a coffee capsule machine, an in-room coffee station and cocktail bar with snacks, free wireless internet, BOSE sound system, flower arrangements, robes and plenty of places to sit and relax.

Living room

The bed was absolutely huge and the pillows were incredibly comfortable. Both Matt and I dove into the bed and found all our worries just melt away. The window shades are great at blocking out light so, if you do feel like a sleep-in or midday nap, you can make the room nice and dark. The bathroom was also a real highlight for us! The shower and bath area are built on the side of the room so you can gaze over the bright city lights while enjoying a soak in the tub or the fantastic water pressure from the rainforest showerhead.

Overall, our room was simply wonderful. It was far more spacious and luxurious than anything I’ve experienced in Hanoi before. We loved having a place so spacious as it felt almost as though we had our own apartment in Hanoi, a little space that felt like home. In addition to the corner suite, room types include Deluxe, Premier, Club InterContinental, Premier Suite, Ambassador Suite, Royal Suite and Presidential Suite. With room types starting at 46sqm and going all the way up to 348sqm, you’re sure to find one that suits your personal needs, travel style and budget.

As we were staying in a Suite, we were given access to the hotel’s Club Lounge. If you can, I would absolutely recommend booking a room type that includes Club Lounge access as the benefits take a great stay and make it amazing! We received special check-in at the lounge and were able to enjoy breakfast and daily snacks there too. As the area is only accessible by Club Lounge guests, we were often the only people there meaning it was peaceful, quiet and a little bit special. We felt like celebrities!

Let’s talk about the food situation…

Yes, let’s talk about the food situation! Owing to the hotel’s location and how spacious it is, they’ve been able to incorporate a range of food and beverage options. Not only that, but the staff told us they’re really focused on making the hotel a great food destination on its own. This means they’re serious about creating delicious food and making it so good that people visit just to eat there.

Let’s start with breakfast. As I mentioned earlier, we ate our breakfast daily in the Club Lounge and found the food to be insanely delicious. In addition to a carefully curated breakfast buffet serving fresh pastries and bread and an extensive selection of continental goodies, there’s an a la carte menu too. We tried local favourites like traditional Vietnamese Pho and Vietnamese coffee (YUM!) as well as traditional western favourites too.

The breakfast was so good, you guys. Matt and I pretty much lost our minds every day trying to decide how much we could eat without ruining our appetite for the rest of the day. It wasn’t easy. If you don’t stay in a room with Club access, don’t worry, I caught a glimpse of the breakfast at 3 Spoons and it looked absolutely amazing too!

The hotel has a whole range of great dining options to choose from. While I absolutely, 100% recommend you eat as much great local food as possible on the streets of Hanoi, there are some days when you’ve been out, sightseeing for hours and just want to grab a bite at the hotel before you head up to bed. When that situation happens, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Landmark 72

Make your way to 3 Spoons Restaurant and peruse a menu combining three of the very best cuisines! There’s Vietnamese Chinese fusion, Japanese and Italian so you can pick and choose your favourites from each menu or stick to one. Matt and I opted to mix and match, starting our meal with dumplings and following it up with pasta! The food, drinks and service were all fantastic and we loved being able to soak in the views of the city below while enjoying our meal.

In addition to 3 Spoons, the hotel also offers exceptional quality steak and wine at Stellar Steakhouse. The restaurant is straight out of your Great Gatsby fantasies, offering a decadent, other-worldly experience. For those with a flair for fun, you might like to visit Stellar Tepanyaki and finish your night off with bespoke cocktails at the hotel’s very own speakeasy, Q Bar.

We were also treated to a decadent afternoon tea at The Hive lounge, paired with DAMMANN Frères tea and the most beautiful assortment of cakes and savoury bites. Matt had never done an afternoon tea before and was absolutely blown away by it! We had so much fun sitting there talking, eating and laughing together, it was a really nice experience and the food was insanely good! Find out more about the hotel’s dining experiences here.

What other facilities does the hotel have?

While our stay pretty much revolved around food and our amazing room, the hotel boasts a range of other facilities too. On the 71st floor, you’ll find a 24-hour fully equipped, state-of-the-art fitness centre complete with treadmills, cross trainers, upright bikes, stairclimbers, multi-gym machines, free weight and a spacious yoga studio.

Visit the 7th floor and you’ll find a swimming pool with views over the city skyline, perfect for a refreshing swim to start the day or as a great way to beat the heat. It’s also the perfect spot to unwind with poolside cocktails or mocktails and just sit back, relax and enjoy your holiday. Hotel guests are also able to access the Fitness Centre, Yoga & Zumba classes, table tennis, tennis court, squash court, indoor mini-golf, sauna and jacuzzi all located at the 7th floor Health Club.

Landmark 72

Treat yourself to a pampering session at The Spa with a luxurious facial, signature massage therapy or decadent body scrub. Treatments here are aimed at relaxation for the mind, body and soul and are perfectly accompanied by gorgeous L’Occitane en Provence products. Yummy!

We also found the hotel’s service to be impeccable and I wanted to include that here as it felt like a real value-add to us! We needed to change a few bookings and get information on local spots and the concierge was incredibly helpful with this. They made calls for us, amended bookings and relayed messages for us. In a sense, they became our on-the-ground travel agents! They were absolutely amazing and there were many things we would’ve struggled with if it hadn’t been for them.

They were also fantastic at helping us with Grab and regular Taxis. They’d check where we were going, and talk to the drivers for us to make sure they understood where we were headed and that we got away safely. At every turn, there was a staff member there ready and willing to help! The customer service they provided us was some of the best we have ever experienced and it elevated our stay in many ways. This level of service is what makes a good stay fantastic!

The verdict…

Our stay at InterContinental Hanoi Landmark 72 was unlike any other we’ve experienced in Hanoi before. We loved the big hotel experience as it afforded us an incredibly spacious room, unbeatable views and an impeccable level of service. I cannot speak highly enough about the hotel’s customer service! Each and every single staff member, from those who greeted us at the front door to the Club Lounge team, were fantastic. We were treated with respect and genuine care, you can tell through their demeanour and actions the people who work at the hotel love their jobs!

Landmark 72

The attention to detail, care and simple beauty all around us made our stay relaxing and incredibly enjoyable. We had days where we just wanted to stay bundled up in bed all day, the room was that cosy. After a few days, it felt as though our room was our own space, as though we lived there. It felt so nice to be so at ease in a hotel and be able to relax completely. We knew, at any point, the staff were just a phone call away to help us in any way we needed.

Landmark 72

I would very happily recommend a stay at InterContinental Hanoi Landmark 72 to my friends and family! It’s important, of course, you factor in the hotel’s location as I described earlier in this review. But, as I said, we loved the location for quite a few different reasons and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. If you’re looking for the best place to stay in Hanoi, make sure you take the time to consider InterContinental Hanoi Landmark 72.
