I’ve spent a lot of time in Brisbane and one of my absolute favourite ways to enjoy the city is with a picnic. There’s nothing quite like finding a patch of green, unpacking good food, and soaking in the river breeze. Over the years, I’ve tested out a lot of picnic spots and I keep coming back to the same one. For me, the best picnic spot in Brisbane is River Quay Green at South Bank.

Why River Quay Green is the best
River Quay Green has everything you could want for a picnic in the city. The large lawn rolls right down to the water’s edge, and the view across the Brisbane River to the CBD skyline is unbeatable. At sunset, the city lights flicker on and reflect off the water, making it one of the most beautiful urban picnic spots I’ve seen.

Food and drink options
It’s not just the view, though. The area is well maintained, with plenty of space to spread out a blanket or kick off your shoes and sit on the grass. There are shaded areas from trees nearby, toilets within walking distance, and the buzz of South Bank all around you.
You can always pack your own picnic, but one of the best parts of River Quay Green is the access to food. Right behind the lawn, you’ll find a cluster of excellent restaurants and bars. These days, popular choices include OTTO Ristorante, The Jetty South Bank and Julius Pizzeria in Fish Lane, just a short walk away. Many of them offer takeaway, so you can order and bring it straight down to the grass.

There’s also the option of grabbing picnic supplies from the South Bank Collective Market (Friday to Sunday) or even the South Bank Woolworths if you prefer a simpler approach. Brisbane’s café scene is thriving, so it’s easy to pick up quality bites nearby.

Events and atmosphere
South Bank often hosts seasonal events that bring even more life to River Quay Green. Food festivals, live music and outdoor pop-ups can transform the lawn into a lively gathering place. Even on a quiet weekday afternoon, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Families, couples, and groups of friends all make use of the space without it ever feeling overcrowded.

My perfect picnic setup
When I picnic at River Quay Green, I keep it simple: a soft blanket, a few cushions, and a tote bag filled with snacks, sparkling water, and something sweet. If I’m in the mood for something easy, I’ll pick up wood-fired pizza or a fresh baguette with cheese and charcuterie. As the sun drops and the lights of the city start to glow, it feels like the whole of Brisbane is putting on a show.

In summary…
River Quay Green really is Brisbane’s best picnic spot. It has the perfect mix of views, atmosphere, and convenience. Whether you’re planning a romantic date, catching up with friends, or just wanting some solo time in the fresh air, it’s a spot that makes you fall in love with Brisbane all over again.
