1. Grab some wine and whisky

Before boarding, you might like to stock up on a few bottles of your favourite winter warmers like red wine or whisky. The prices at JR Duty-Free, located in Brisbane Airport’s International Terminal, are fantastic and you can often scoop up a great deal as they tend to have specials and discounts when you buy two bottles. Also, keep in mind they offer price matching so if you find an identical item at another duty-free, domestic retail or online store, for a lower price, they will match that price and beat it by 5%! Yessss!  Grab a bottle of Tasmanian Pinot Noir for a friend or a bottle of Lagavulin to share with a friend in the snow.

Pro Tip: For anyone wanting to speed things up a little, you can use JR Duty-Free’s Buy Fly Collect service. Simply place an order in any JR/ Duty-Free Departures Airport store and pick it up after your trip, in Arrivals. You can also use the pre-order service online and conveniently pick up your shopping at the airport in the Departures stores!

2. Warm up with hot chocolate

Warm-up with a delicious hot chocolate or coffee from Hudson’s Coffee! Now, I know, airport coffee isn’t exactly famous for being good but Hudson’s actually serves up a great cup of coffee. They also have some great snacks and quick bites to choose from too, if you’re hungry. I also love that they sell keep cups so you can purchase your own reusable cup at the airport if you don’t already have one and take it with you on your adventure.

3. Winterproof Skincare

When Matt and I visited Canada this year, I seriously underestimated just how much impact the cold, dry climate would have on my skin. If you’re headed anywhere cold, you may like to grab some additional winterproof skincare to take with you. Things like rich, ultra-thick hand cream and a good quality lip balm will always come in useful. You may also need a really good quality, thick face moisturiser, body moisturiser and sunscreen too. If you want to treat yourself, splashing out on serums and facemasks is always a nice idea and you can use all your new goodies on the plane to save your skin from getting tired and stressed out on the long flight. Again, be sure to take advantage of those great prices at JR Duty-Free!

4. Treat yo self!

I often think about treating myself to a few special, high-end beauty products but, to be honest, the prices usually turn me off. If you’re thinking about doing the same thing, you might want to use your trip to take advantage of duty-free prices as well as JR Duty-Free’s best price guarantee. You could save some extra spending money on gorgeous items like La Mer beauty products, for example!

5. Grab a bite from Brisbane River Grill

Feeling peckish? Warm up pre-flight with something delicious to eat from Brisbane River Grill. Now, again, airport food usually doesn’t inspire mental images of delicious fare but we’ve eaten food from Brisbane River Grill a few times now and it really is yummy! Ingredients here are sourced from local suppliers so you can enjoy free range eggs from Tamborine Mountains, cheese from Woombye or prawns from Mooloolaba. The share menu is perfect for a group or you can tuck into something more substantial all by yourself.

6. Get tech ready

When Matt and I head to the snow, we find our GoPro is the one camera that really holds up to the conditions! If you’ve been thinking of getting one or need a reliable camera to get the photo/video you want of your winter adventures, you can scoop up a deal on a duty-free GoPro. JR Duty-Free is also a great spot to grab some noise-cancelling headphones for the long-haul flight, your epic shred session or just those long car rides with the family.

7. Winterproof your wardrobe

If you’re feeling like you didn’t pack quite enough warm clothes, you can duck into shops like Merino Collection to pad your winter wardrobe. Treat yourself to a new beanie, earmuffs, toasty warm gloves, ugg boots or even something essential like a windproof, waterproof coat. You may also like to scoop up a scarf, hat, wool-lined boots or even a plush toy as a gift.

8. Protect your peepers

One thing I didn’t realise before Matt and I went skiing the first time is just how glary it is up there! If like me, you’re a bit of a snow novice, you may not remember to pack sunglasses. Don’t worry, Brisbane Airport’s got you covered. Head directly Sunglass Hut where you can treat yourself to a new pair of gorgeous sunnies and ensure those peepers of yours are well protected from the harsh light bouncing off the snow.
