There are many reasons to visit Las Vegas! When we visited I was really overwhelmed by just how much there was to see and do, it took me by surprise as I thought it would just be all about gambling. It’s a place that really sticks in my mind and somewhere I’m looking forward to going back to when I can spend a little more time exploring. Today, I thought I’d share with you five reasons to visit Las Vegas!
1. It’s an affordable holiday destination
When you visit Vegas, you have a lot of control over how much you spend and really, you’re spoilt for choice. If you’re a straight baller and have a spare $7,000 (per night!) lying around you can set up camp in one of the incredible themed suites at big-name hotels like the Barbie Suite or The Hardwood Suite at The Palms Casino Resort, which covers 10,000 square meters and includes a basketball court! It’s worth clicking through the Suites and Penthouses anyway, just to gawk at the insane rooms they have… I’ve never seen anything like them in person. Maybe one day, hey?!
If you’re a mere mortal, you can pick up luxury hotel rooms for around $100 per night, rooms that would usually set you back around 10 times that in New York. If you’re on a budget you can find accommodation at a 3-star hotel for as little as $20 to $30 per night!
Not only is the accommodation affordable but drinks are free in the casinos, provided you’re gambling. You’re still required to tip the cocktail waitresses and the better you tip the more frequently they’ll come back to refresh your beverage for you. What can you order for free? Absolutely anything you like!
2. All the great things nearby
Okay, so aside from the gambling and all the glitz that goes with Las Vegas, there’s also a lot of natural beauty in the area. You can drive 20 minutes to Red Rock Canyon or take the hour-long journey to Lake Mead or visit the Hoover Dam. If you feel like losing part of your epidermis you can drive a little further out to Death Valley in California or visit Zion National Park in Utah.
For the ultimate in natural beauty and wonder, take a 5-hour road trip/detox to the Grand Canyon then recreate your favourite scenes from The Hangover and Fear and Loathing on your way driving back into Vegas. The great thing about all of these places is you’ll be able to find a tour company that offers day trips for you, so you don’t need to worry about hiring a car and finding your way out there if you don’t want to.
3. It’s an adventure playground
I struggle to think of another place that caters to big kids quite like Vegas does! There are so many fun things to do that fulfil your child-like dreams, it’s just not possible to do them all! You can get behind the wheel of a NASCAR vehicle and take it for a spin around a track or hire a dune buggy and rip around sand dunes like Jay-Z and Kanye West! Try your hand/body at indoor skydiving, swim with dolphins at Siegfried & Roy’s Garden Marine Habitat, take a hot air balloon ride or go white-water rafting. Find a shooting range and go all Pulp Fiction on some targets, take a trail ride on horseback, go mountain biking or hiking OR go zip lining 400 feet in the air between two hotels.
I also have to mention the shows, so many shows! While they may not be for everyone, they’ll be a dream come true for some people. You catch everything from David Copperfield, Cirque de Soleil and Britney Spears to people like Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Jay Leno, Wayne Brady and David Spade. There is so much to see and do, that’s not even mentioning all the museums there are to visit.
4. Incredible food
What kind of food do you like to eat? Mate, it doesn’t really matter because they’ve got it all. Dive headfirst into a world-class buffet, like the one at Wynn, or head to a world-class French restaurant for the meal of a lifetime. Chow down on a Gordon Ramsey steak, eat sushi at Sushi Roku, indulge at De Niro’s Nobu at Cesar’s Palace or eat on top of the world at The Stratosphere. Go loco at Hot n Juicy Crawfish or soak up those cocktails with a good ol’ burrito at Chipotle.
The options are absolutely endless and you should definitely try to eat at both ends of the scale, from the iconic and simple to the indulgent and special. I doubt you’ll find another place in the world with the same range in such a small space as you’ll find in Vegas. Check out this great guide on 50 must eat Las Vegas Meals.
5. The sites
Before we went to Vegas I had seen so many movies and photographs of the place, actually being there was overwhelming and so exciting. Whether you’re wandering through Planet Hollywood, staring up at the incredible canopy of the Glitter Gulch or marvelling at the Bellagio fountain you’re sure to be feeling a little freaked out at how surreal it is to finally see this amazing place.
It’s a wonderland of noises, smells, sights and flashing lights. There is just so much to see and do and if you follow your instinct as it draws you from one place to the next, you’ll definitely lose track of time just like we did. Not only are the hotels and casinos incredible, but the restaurants you’ve been seeing for years are all popping up around you, food celebrities in their own right. It’s a great place to do a spot of people watching too and take in the eclectic mix of humans buzzing around you.
