Where to stay: Jpark Island Resort, Mactan
The base for the trip was Jpark Island Resort, set right on the edge of Mactan Island, about 20-25 minutes from Cebu’s airport. It was one of those places where you check in, get your welcome drink, and immediately want to ditch your suitcase in favour of a swim. With a private beachfront, multiple restaurants, and a huge waterpark, it felt more like a destination in itself.

The waterpark was a total highlight. I couldn’t resist launching myself down the waterslide, even if my first run was more gentle float than thrill ride. There’s also a tube ride that loops lazily around, which is the perfect place to switch into holiday mode.

I also checked out Pororo Park, which is technically designed for kids, but I’m not ashamed to say I had a ball in the ball pit and on the slides. It’s a great spot for families, and honestly, for any adult who’s still a big kid at heart. The resort also offers parasailing, snorkelling, jet skiing, and banana boat rides, if you’re keen to level up the adventure.

Day one: Slides, sunshine & superb Cantonese
After settling in, I dove straight into the waterpark fun. There’s something about flying down slides and floating along in the sunshine that immediately flips the holiday switch. I didn’t even get close to exploring everything; there’s so much on offer.
That night, I dressed up just a little and headed to Ching Hai, the resort’s Cantonese restaurant. And honestly? It was one of the best meals I had in the Philippines, fresh, flavour-packed, and beautifully presented. Every dish was a winner, but more than that, it was the warm, genuine hospitality that left a mark. The people here? Kind, joyful, and truly unforgettable.

Day two: Cebu’s rich history comes to life
The next day kicked off with a guided history tour through Cebu City, and I loved it. There’s something special about standing in the same places where huge moments in history unfolded. The first stop was Fort San Pedro, originally built from logs in just 11 days back in 1565. It’s a beautiful structure that tells the story of Cebu’s Spanish colonial past.

Next was Magellan’s Cross, protected inside a charming red-roofed kiosk and believed to have been planted by Ferdinand Magellan himself in 1521. I also visited the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the country, which holds deep spiritual and cultural significance.

One of the most fascinating stops was a humble-looking building housing the oldest dated house in the Philippines, tucked inside what looked like an old warehouse. Inside, time stood still. I loved learning about traditional Filipino homes, Spanish influences, and how families once displayed wealth through carved wooden shawls and dresses.

Midway through the day, I took a sweet detour to The Chocolate Chamber. Meeting Raquel, the Chocolate Queen, and learning how cacao is grown and prepared was a real highlight. I tried traditional Filipino hot chocolate, rich, earthy, and surprisingly bitter at first. But by the second sip, I got it. It was warming and grounding in a way coffee just isn’t.

As the sun went down, I headed to Coral, one of the resort’s beachfront restaurants, for dinner under the stars. I missed the sunset, but the cocktails were cold, the live music was breezy, and the highlight? A traditional boodle fight, a huge shared feast laid out on banana leaves. Mine was a more refined version, but the spirit of camaraderie and abundance was unforgettable.

Day three: Island hopping and ocean feasts
No trip to Cebu would be complete without getting out on the water. On the final day, I joined an island-hopping tour run by the resort. The destination? Caohagan Island is a small, peaceful patch of paradise surrounded by crystal-clear water.

From the moment I arrived, it was clear how much the local community cared for their island. It was spotless, welcoming, and full of life. Kids played in the shade, chickens wandered freely, and I was treated to an epic seafood lunch prepared by locals, fresh crab, grilled fish, the works.

It was the kind of afternoon where time slows down. The kind where you realise how little you need to be happy: good food, sunshine, and kind-hearted people.

Final thoughts
After three packed days of exploring Cebu, I left with sandy feet, a full heart, and a growing list of reasons to come back. There’s just something about this part of the Philippines that gets under your skin. It’s the warmth of the people, the richness of the culture, the laughter around every corner, and the feeling that life doesn’t need to be complicated to be beautiful.
