1. Etsu Izakaya

Japanese food doesn’t get much better or more authentic than Etsu Izakaya, located in Mermaid Beach. In true Izakaya fashion, the restaurant’s shopfront is understated, lit only by a red lantern. But, slide open the white barn door and you’ll enter a whole new world of flavour. The service here is impeccable so be sure to listen to and follow any and all food recommendations provided by your server! You’ll want to order a whole bunch of plates to share and your biggest problem is going to be keeping a lid on your excitement, especially if you’re a true fan of authentic Japanese food. The sushi and sashimi are amazing as is, well, everything else on the menu from the edamame and miso through to the yakitori, gyoza, tempura and their signature chargrilled fish collar, cooked to perfection on a robata grill. Just, eat there! It’s the best!

2. Social Eating House

For a dining experience, you won’t soon forget, head directly to Social Eating House. Located in The Oracle Boulevard in Broadbeach, the focus here is on creating a warm and welcoming space while offering an extensive international tapas/shared plate menu. The quality of the food and service quite simply blew us away! The hardest part was deciding which dishes to choose and, if you’re a seafood lover, you’re going to be in heaven. Each dish was perfectly prepared and beautifully plated, with smaller portions allowing you to sample a wide range of items – almost like a degustation. This is one Gold Coast spot not to be missed!

3. Jimmy Wah’s

Jimmy Wah’s serves up modern Vietnamese food in a comfortable setting, right in the heart of Burleigh on The Esplanade. You’ll definitely want to make a booking as we arrived right at opening time, having booked, and the place was immediately packed. When you get a glimpse of the menu, it’s easy to see why! The food here is best-enjoyed family-style, so you can sample as many tasty treats as possible. There are plenty of options for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free folk too! The food is incredibly fresh, packed full of flavour and absolutely delicious. Highlights include the steamed bao buns, Banh Mi with tempura soft shell crab and caramelised pork belly. Also, don’t sleep on the mocktails!

4. Paddock Bakery

One of my favourite breakfast or brunch spots on the coast, Paddock Bakery in Burleigh Heads is a must-try spot! The clever folk at Paddock set up shop in an old Queenslander home, transforming it and the surrounding garden into a relaxing destination for fantastic food. There are no bookings so either time your visit for a weekday or be prepared to wait if visiting on a weekend (trust me, it’s worth it). The menu is stacked with delectable options including their famous dippy eggs, doughnut french toast, pea and halloumi fritters or their iconic rustic avo. The food here is fresh, flavoursome and elevated by freshly baked bread, rolls and goodies. Not to mention, the coffee is fantastic too!

5. Edgewater Dining & Lounge Bar

Perched overlooking the glittering Gold Coast waterways, Edgewater serves modern Australian fare with a twist of traditional Italian-style cooking. One thing you’ll notice is an old-world, bistro approach to service that will take you back to restaurants lining the streets of France and Italy. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner each menu brings local flavours alive! Tuck into fresh oysters or share a bunch of small plates like perfectly cooked grilled king prawns, decadent meatballs and tender pork belly. Whatever you do, don’t sleep on the cocktails! Trust me, dine here once and you’ll be back time and time again for the amazing food and impeccable service. There’s also a jetty so you can visit via boat or jet ski! Fancy!

6. Goodness Gracias

Get your hands on some truly delicious plant-based goodness at Goodness Gracias, located in Palm Beach. Open Wednesday through to Sunday from 11 am to 8 pm, it’s a top spot for lunch and dinner. With limited seating spots inside and outside you may like to plan to grab your meal to-go and enjoy on the balcony of your accommodation, a gorgeous lookout spot or on the beach. 7. Granddad Jack’s Craft Distillery

Lovers of gin best make a beeline to Grandad Jack’s Craft Distillery, one of the Gold Coast’s best-hidden gems! This family-owned and operated distillery pays tribute to beloved Grandad Jack, a man whose story is best told by his grandson and great-grandson. Pop in for a guided tour of the distillery to hear it all for yourself while learning about the gin-making process, while sipping on a few glasses and taste-testers as you go. You can also just stop in for drinks of an afternoon! The space here is beautifully curated, offering cosy seating options, plenty of light and a fantastic menu of drinks to choose from. Trust me, the gin really is that good!

8. Bumbles Cafe

You’ll find Bumbles Cafe located along the gorgeous Gold Coast waterways in Surfers Paradise, a beloved spot buzzing with locals. This is a big call but Bumbles serves up my favourite cup of coffee on the Gold Coast! Honestly, I can’t stop thinking about it and I keep comparing other coffees to it. They offer a lunch and breakfast menu stacked with delicious panya sourdough breads, Australian butter, Bumbles own honey and jams. I’m obsessed with crumpets and love their sourdough ones! Their menu changes but rest assured it’s full of fan favourites and unique creations and the interior is reminiscent of a magical bookstore meets eclectic antique enclave.

The dining room is perfectly positioned at Burleigh Heads, looking out over the coastline with uninterrupted views. Classy and cool it offers the perfect location to enjoy a truly delicious feast. Lucky, the food here lives up to the hype! The menu focuses on exceptional seafood paired perfectly with Pan-Asian flavours. 12. Doughnut Time

‘It’s always a good time!’ is the perfect slogan for one of our favourite spots, Doughnut Time. Shop fit-outs don’t get much cooler than this one, with a mouth-watering assortment of doughnuts sitting plump and pretty in the window, tempting you inside. It’s important you know that one is not enough so don’t be sure, stock up on a box of four or more to take home and enjoy with friends (or just by yourself while binge-watching your favourite show!) Tuck into their decadent concoctions including vegan options like the Fairy Godmother topped with buttercream frosting and colourful 100s and 1000s or the red velvet and cookie & cream topped Liam Hemsworthy (also vegan!). Sink your teeth into the Strawberry Cheese Bae, Time Tam Time, Caramilk or Slim Shady lavished with vanilla glaze and mini M&M’s. With a brand new gelato bar just opened, you’ll definitely satisfy your sweet tooth.

13. Longboards Laidback Eatery & Bar

I’ll be honest, as a local I tend to steer clear of Surfers Paradise and its dining spots. But, on a recent trip, my opinion that it’s a destination only suited for tourists was totally changed! Rather than being a kitsch, themed restaurant with average food Longboards Laidback Eatery & Bar serves up truly delicious burgers! Which makes sense because they’ve been voted one of Australia’s best burger joints. With a range of burgers to choose from including beef, chicken, pork, vegetarian and vegan options as well as wings, loaded fries, seafood, jalapeño poppers, salads and more there’s something for everyone! If you’re a local too, get out of your head and let your tastebuds do the judging because there are some real hidden gems in Surfers. A visit to Longboards would be perfect on a summer day sinking burgers, craft beers and delicious fries. Yes, please!

14. Hop On Brewery Tour

The Gold Coast is home to an array of craft breweries and the best way to see them is with a brewery tour! Hop On Brewery Tours offers a number of different tours to choose from including half and full-day options. We visited three different breweries as part of a half-day tour; Black Hops, Precinct Brewing Co. and Burleigh Brewing Co. At each spot, our expert guide talked us through the history of the brewery and took us through a tasting, educating us on the entire brewing process from start to finish. It’s educational, incredibly fun, full of great beer and, best of all, you don’t have to worry about who’s the designated driver!

We pre-booked our Hop On Brewery Tour here

15. Justin Lane Establishment

If you L-O-V-E pizza and pasta, you need to eat at Justin Lane Establishment, a spot famous for their incredible sourdough crust, wood-fired pizzas and delectable pasta. The restaurant has a super cool interior, though I definitely recommend booking a table so you don’t miss out or you can grab your goodies to go and enjoy at your accommodation or on the beach. They’ve got a range of mouthwatering pizzas to choose from and offer options for gluten-free and vegan folk too, as well as a yummy range of starters and desserts! We love the cocktails here and always look forward to sinking our teeth into that delectable pizza crust.

16. Social Brew

Located along James Street in Burleigh, Social Brew is quite the oasis. With tables and an abundance of booths spread out beneath a canopy of plants and twinkling lights, it’s a cosy and welcoming place to start the day. Dig into their iconic Social Stack with all the trimmings, Harissa Haloumi Burger, Breaky Burrito or tuck into one of their tasty acai bowls. I’m quite the acai bowl fanatic and loved their fresh, delicious bowl topped with loads of fruit. The coffee here is wonderful too, making it the ideal place to start your day!

17. Steampunk

As the name would suggest, Steampunk is themed around the unique combination of 19-the century industrial steam-powered machinery and retrofuturistic technology. 18. Gelato Messina

Don’t you dare think about visiting the southern end of the Gold Coast without putting a visit to Gelato Messina on your itinerary. I simply won’t have it! Proclaiming themselves the makers of Australia’s best gelato, I have to wholeheartedly agree with the Messina team. You’ll find the store on Marine Parade in Coolangatta open from 2 pm on weekdays and 12 pm on weekends, with doors staying open until 8:30 pm The flavours are insanely good with a range of must-try specials and classics like macadamia crunch, pistachio praline, pear and rhubarb and more. Visiting three wineries, we enjoyed tastings at each spot while learning about the region’s unique wine scene. 30. Salt Meats Cheese

Lovers of Italian fare (me!) will want to put Salt Meats Cheese on their Gold Coast food itinerary, pronto! Located in Surfers Paradise, this spot is manned by actual Italian chefs and service staff, using traditional cooking methods learned in flavour HQ (that’s what I’m calling Italy now.) We did a pizza cooking class, which was fantastic! If you want all the food with none of the work, you can pop in for lunch or dinner and get stuck into their menu. Start with antipasti then make your way through their pasta menu or just go straight for the incredibly delicious wood-fired pizzas, with vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan options available.

31. Burleigh Heads Fishmonger

Forget fancy restaurants, one of the best things to do on the coast is to visit a local fishmonger and enjoy a laid-back feast on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Personally, we love visiting the Burleigh Heads Fishmonger but there are plenty of others dotting the coast (read this guide by The Weekend Edition sharing where to find the Gold Coast’s best fish and chips for more inspo!). Then, wander down to a secluded spot under the shade of a tree and breathe in the fresh ocean air while savouring your lunch. For vegans, you may want to grab an Açai bowl instead! They’re a beloved favourite among GC locals so you won’t have too much trouble finding one (in fact, there’s a number of great spots on James Street in Burleigh Heads including one right next to the fishmonger).

Incredibly popular, I’d recommend you book a table to make sure you don’t miss out as the menu is fantastic. Margarita lovers, like myself, should definitely try the mango margarita before tucking into tasty bites including nachos, tacos, tortas, burritos, enchiladas and more.
