A look at the week that was and a little insight into the #bloglife, sharing things I just can’t share anywhere else!
Highlights of the week
I have SO much to catch you up on, it’s not even funny! Let me start right at the beginning and, FYI, this week’s TW is coming to you from the floor of Phuket airport, right next to a free powerpoint between the duty-free cigarettes and perfume stores. Amazing. Also, I have to tell you, I’m writing this to you on Thursday evening as I’ll still be on my flight home when you get this on Friday morning.
Last Tuesday night, Matt and I packed our bags and drove to Brisbane Airport for our flights to Koh Samui. We flew with Thai Airways from Brisbane to Bangkok, with a short layover, then on to Koh Samui. The flight was really good – we managed to nab the extra legroom seats at the front and slept most of the way! I was also really impressed with the food onboard. Our vegetarian meals were cheesy ravioli and it was absolutely delicious (even the bread roll was good! It was a proper one, not one of those rock-hard ones you sometimes get). After dinner and a movie (hello, Tomb Raider reboot), we fell asleep and woke up in Bangkok.
Our connecting flight was also a breeze, a quick one hour in the sky and we were touching down in Koh Samui. We were greeted at the airport by our transfer and whisked away to Cosi Samui, our first hotel, at Chaweng Beach. I have to say, airport transfers are my new favourite thing, it really does make it easier getting from the airport to your hotel and takes any stress, guesswork or haggling out of it (especially good after long-haul flights).
We checked-in to the hotel and were so happy to see our room! It was really spacious and modern, the kind of hotel that’s really good for the modern traveller. There are USB ports EVERYWHERE, spots to sit (that aren’t the bed), a really good shower and a floating bed you can tuck your suitcase under so you don’t stub your toe on it (thank goodness). We spent the afternoon napping and showering then headed out for a stroll along the beach, followed by dinner at a local restaurant.
The next day was Matt’s birthday! We got up early, had breakfast at Cosi, then headed out again for a fun day in Koh Samui. Chaweng Beach is kind of the busy, nightlife, cocktails, Muay Thai boxing part of the island so there was plenty to see and do. We had a delicious lunch, enjoyed drinks overlooking the beach, soaked in the sunshine then finished the day off with an awesome sunset dinner at Coast Beach Club & Bistro. There was cake, cocktails and SO much good food!
We woke up on Friday morning, had a swim at the hotel rooftop pool, packed our bags and jumped in the transfer to Centra by Centara Coconut Beach Resort Samui, with a quick stop at Centara Villas Samui for lunch and to meet a few really cute dogs! We loved Coconut as soon as we stepped foot outside the car. The vibe was so laid back and relaxed, it felt like we were a world away when we were really only a short drive from everything.
Our villa was stunning, right next to the resort’s restaurant and beachfront pool (there were two pools – one with a swim-up bar) and the beach. We got our swimmers on and dove straight in for an afternoon swim followed by an amazing sunset dinner and cocktails on the beach. The next day was spent much the same way – enjoying the great food, beautiful weather and stunning beaches. Coconut is the kind of place you could quite easily lose a week or two just enjoying the peace and quiet then go back home feeling totally refreshed.
We were sad to leave Koh Samui but excited to move onto the next part of our trip in Phuket. On Saturday we flew from Koh Samui to Phuket and the one-hour plane journey went by in the blink of an eye. We were greeted at the airport by one of the lovely staff members from Centara Blue Marine Resort & Spa Phuket who pointed out a few sites and shared information with us on the way to the resort. After a quick bite to eat at the hotel restaurant, we got settled into our room and had to sit on the balcony for a while to soak in the incredible views of the Andaman Sea and Phuket.
I really loved the position of the hotel, it was high enough on the hill that you could see everything but not right in the thick of things at Patong Beach. Matt and I spent a good few hours on the balcony after dinner just watching the sky change colour and soaking in the fresh sea air. That night, we slept with the balcony doors wide open and woke up to that gorgeous sea breeze at sunrise.
The next morning we enjoyed breakfast at the hotel then changed to a new room type, right off one of the resort’s three pools. We got straight in for a swim and soaked in the sunshine, taking more than a few turns on the awesome slippery dip in the second pool. Seriously, a slippery dip! And it was really fast too! Afterwards, we got dressed and caught the free shuttle into town, taking some time to check out Jungceylon Mall and Patong Beach before walking back to the resort. There was much more swimming followed by a Tuk Tuk ride back down to Patong Beach so we could grab dinner and see it at night – it’s crazy!
After packing our bags for the second last time, we said goodbye to Blue Marine and hello to Centara Villas Phuket, a short drive away but a world away. We were treated to our very own private villa with gorgeous views of the water and felt like we’d been tucked away in our little jungle hut. After getting cosy and relaxing for a while, we wandered up to The Cliff restaurant for dinner. If you love seafood, their seafood buffet would be your dream come true!
Which brings us to Wednesday – my birthday! Matt woke me up with a very joyous, ‘Happy Birthday,’ then we headed up to breakfast for banana pancakes and mango fruit shakes. We sat on the balcony of our private villa for a while just talking and relaxing before deciding our hunger was big enough again to order room service, which we shared with a very cheeky bird who kept stealing bits of our Pad Thai. After a few hours swimming in the two resort pools and some time spent down by the water watching waves crash against the rocks, we wandered along the beach to Centara Grand Beach Resort.
Of course, we got stuck straight into the cocktail list at Coast Beach Club & Bistro! I had quite a few frozen margaritas and Matt enjoyed more than his fair share of ‘prescription’ iced tea’s! All these cocktails were soaked up by fresh, homemade pasta, warm bread rolls and Caprese salad followed by an awesome fire show on the beach. It was perfect!
This morning, we packed our bags for the very last time then wandered down to the day spa for an hour of pampering via coconut oil massage. Afterwards, we floated back up to the lobby, said our goodbye’s to the amazing staff who have taken such good care of us and climbed in our transfer car bound for the airport.
We have had the best time here in Thailand and loved every moment from Koh Samui to Phuket! If you want to see what we got up to, I’ve saved everything I shared on my Insta-Stories to the highlights on my profile – visit my Instagram here. I just want to say a massive thank you to each and every person at the Centara properties we visited – you all took such good care of us, spoilt us and made us feel so very welcome here in Thailand and at your resort’s, it really was so lovely.
I’ve got some awesome guides to Koh Samui and Phuket coming soon and Matt will be putting together some videos of our trip too. There are also loads of photos on Instagram already with many more to come!
Now, we’re about to board our flight’s home with Thai Airways. We’ll be flying to Bangkok and then onward to Brisbane. I’m really looking forward to more of that delicious cheesy ravioli followed by a movie marathon and then getting home to see the cats – I miss them so much when we’re gone.
I hope you had a great week, I’ll talk to you soon – Phoebe xx
