Little Grey Box is a travel site and it’s usually our goal to give people guides and insight to help them plan their best adventure. But today Matt and I are saddened by the loss of our lovely little older cat, P. She’s been sick for a long time and has left us, moving onto the next life. She spent one last epic day of absolute love and adoration at home with us – our way of saying thank you for being such a pure soul and bringing so much joy into our lives. With this in mind and, I guess, as a way for me to process it and celebrate her beautiful, meaningful life, I wanted to share with you a few of the things we’ve learned from our gorgeous cat. All the photos in this post are of P – the most loving cat I’ve ever met. You are forever loved.
1. Love is blind
Your cat doesn’t care what you look like. You could be wearing an Atelier Versace gown with your very best Manolo Blahnik’s, face glammed to perfection, not a hair out of place. You could also be wearing those grungy sweatpants with the holes in them, a t-shirt with a questionable smell, no bra, hair in a messy bun and not a shred of makeup and your cat would love you just the same either way. A cat’s love is blind and, I’m certain, also has a very forgiving sense of smell.
2. Money doesn’t matter
You could live in a mansion or a humble home, you could be surrounded by the finest things money can buy or shop exclusively at thrift stores. You could be a millionaire, totally broke or somewhere in between and your cat wouldn’t care either way. They could be sharpening their claws on a $5 cardboard cat scratcher or the Mona Lisa and wouldn’t give a crap either way. Your cat doesn’t love you for your money, your status or anything material, it loves you simply because you are you and it thinks that’s pretty damn great… even if it does put its rear end way too close to your face.
3. You are perfect
In fact, one of the best things about cats is that they don’t judge you. Didn’t get that promotion? Told a lie? Did something terrible you really regret? Mess something up monumentally and feel the weight of the world on your shoulders? Your cat doesn’t care. They love you no matter what, in spite of your flaws and all the mistakes you have and will make. To your cat, you are perfect. Whenever you’re feeling down, try to see yourself through your cat’s eyes – the large, clumsy, totally loveable idiot who gives great belly rubs and makes delicious food.
4. Laughter is the best medicine
For such a graceful creature, cats have an uncanny way of being hysterically clumsy. Getting stuck in weird places, losing traction while trying to run around a corner and colliding into the wall, getting spooked in the hallway and contorting into that sideways, upside down U shape, fur all puffed out, they’re hilarious. I once saw P tear across the house at top speed, unaware the floors had just been mopped. Attempting to leap onto her cat tree she totally lost traction and, somehow, performed a complete backflip, mid-air, managed to stick the landing then took off like she’d just been shot out of a cannon. I laughed so hard I cried.
5. Cuddles fix everything
When you have a really bad, absolutely horrible day and you get home, slump down on the couch and sigh loudly, life can feel totally overwhelming. That is until your loving ball of fur greets you with a happy, trill meow and positions themselves in your lap. Somehow, with each stroke of their fur, each soothing purr and loving look, your troubles seem to melt away. Cuddled up in bed watching movies while you’re sick, having a sneaky cry into their fur during those particularly rough times or ‘helping’ you with your work, cats have a way of grounding you, making you realise nothing is quite as bad as it seems.
6. Naps are important
If there’s one lesson we all need to learn from our cats, it’s that proper rest is very important. They don’t call them cat-naps for nothing! Rest well, rest often and, if you’re lucky enough, rest with your cat by your side… or right on top of your head…. or pressed up against your side, pushing out of the bed…. or curled around your feet.
7. Personal hygiene is also important
To look one’s best, one must be well-groomed at all times. This means adhering to a strict grooming regimen, something I’m sure both my cats wish I would do, rather than looking like an old sock that’s been dragged out from under the bed, covered in dust, hair hanging off you everywhere. Cats know that when you take care of yourself properly, you don’t just look better, you feel better from the inside out.
8. Yell loud enough and you’ll get what you want
Not happy about something? Yell loudly enough and you’ll eventually get what you want. Food bowl empty? Scream loudly. Like the look of something outside? Howl about it. Feeling a bit lonely? Time to exercise those lungs. Don’t take anything laying down, if there’s something you’re not happy about, make like a cat and kick up a fuss about it until it’s fixed.
9. Don’t worry, you’ll land on your feet
Sometimes things can seem out of reach, unattainable, too far away or just totally impossible. This never phases a cat. Why? Because they trust themselves to take a leap and, no matter what, win or lose, land on their feet. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you don’t try to reach the top of the shelves, how will you ever know your limits? How will you ever know what you’re truly capable of? What if you discover you can make it and you really don’t have any limits. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?
10. Curiosity won’t kill you
Despite the old saying, curiosity isn’t a bad thing. Routine is the enemy of time, don’t let it get a roll on and steamroll your dreams, sense of adventure or quest for more. Sniff out new adventures, chase the thread of excitement leading you to new experiences, question what’s behind closed doors and play for as long as possible. Never lose your thirst for adventure.
