My city

I have done a lot of traveling recently and if I didn’t think it was a bit bratty I would have gone so far as to write that first bit in capitals, just to prove my point.

Matt and I have been to 20 countries in 12 months! For the very fortunate out there who are living the travelers dream that may not be many, but to us it’s huge.

We have been everywhere from Budapest to Toronto, Marrakesh to Paris, Reykjavik to Vegas and so many more in between. But, no matter which city we’ve visited we’ve always compared it to our own, Brisbane. I’m not entirely sure how you even begin to compare a sprawling metropolis like New York to small-town Brisbane but we managed to findĀ  a way.

No matter where we were in the world or what we were marveling at we still had Brisbane in our hearts. Traveling has a way of making you nostalgic and very appreciative of your homeland, unless of course you hate your home town and are happy to watch it fade to dust in your rear-view mirror as you speed away! That is not the case for me.

I love my city. It may not be as diverse as London, packed full of history like Rome or as dramatic as the Grand Canyon but it’s our home and we simply love it.

Since coming home I appreciate everything about it and have become quite the local tourist. As I walk to and from work I stop and take photos of the cityscape or find a bar with a great view for after-work drinks to soak it all in. My new tourist persona knows no bounds!

I’m guessing that you love your city too? Even with all of its little faults and the things that annoy you, you can’t help but love it because, like a smelly old cat you rescued from the pound, it’s yours and it’s kind of endearing even with the missing tufts of fur.

I want to share with you a couple of my favourite photos of Brisbane that I have shamelessly taken in the past few months. I think my city is beautiful, warm and friendly and looks fantastic at night with all the city lights reflecting off the river.

But, I don’t know anything about your city! So share it with me.

Find your favourite photo of your city or better yet, become a local tourist and take a new photo of your city. I want to see a photo that captures the things you love about it, what makes you appreciate it. There’s no right or wrong here so let your imagine run wild.

Once you’ve chosen the perfect photo, send it to me with a short description of where the photo was taken and why you chose it. If you write a blog, put a link to your blog on there too and I’ll be sure to include it. If you want to tweet about it because, well, who doesn’t!? Use the hashtag #mycity to share your pic.

The best photos will be posted on my blog and shared with the mega-verse thanks to the world-wide interweb, it’s all very technical, I know.

You can email your photos to: littlegreybox@hotmail.co.uk

Please have your photos submitted by Sunday 21 October!

So, here are my favourites, what are yours?

I’ve never had any place that I’d consider home. I thought NC was home til I moved away and went back for a visit and didn’t like it lol. I was born in Brooklyn, moved to North Carolina when I was 7. Which is where I spent the majority of my life. Now I’m in Colorado, which is growing on me, but it’s not the east coast. I spent a couple months a couple summers ago in Virginia. I can honestly say that was as close to home as anywhere has ever felt to me. Perks were I was close to my NY family, and My NC family, and everyone in between. I felt so calm and at peace there. Wished I never had to leave. Anyway… Thanks for the blog… and the photos. :)

I love many cities of the world. But there’s nothing like coming home to your very own. Like you, I love the feeling.

Ooooooh I love this post. Read something similar (maybe a group blog prompt?) over the summer from my friend Rachael who lives in Spain. I’m going to send you photos! But… a warning. There is nothing resembling a city anywhere near me. You will, perhaps, enjoy photos of grass and trees and broken farm fences and cows, no? Guess we will see. I had no idea Brisbane was so lovely!!! I do believe the lanterns and that last sunset are my favorites.

I loved reading about this love you seem to have for your ‘home town’ and I can also relate to it. I have seen quite some places, but I still love the village I come from and the city I go every day to work. They’re what I call home, whilst the rest of the world is just like my backyard.

I am going to participate in your little competition and I already know what place(s) I am going to share with you!

I travel a lot, yet still have not gotten comfortable to call my current city home. For now, home to me is back with my parents in Hawaii.

I love reading your blog. I love my hometown as well even with it’s flaws and all. I get to be here again and study after we lived abroad for years. Thank you! I appreciate this place even more. :)
